FAQ

  • Does Maryland require a handgun to be concealed?

Maryland does not have a concealed carry permit, the permit is a Wear and Carry Permit, so with the permit you can open carry a firearm. Personally I would not advise to do so though. It is not common place in Maryland to see people openly carrying a firearms like it is in other states. Openly carrying will most likely elicit a response from the police. Even though you are legally doing so in my opinion it is best just to avoid the situation.

  • Can I renew my handgun carry permit before it expires?

You must renew your Wear and Carry Permit 90 days before it expires by visiting https://mdsp.maryland.gov/Organization/Pages/CriminalInvestigationBureau/LicensingDivision/Portal.aspx The MSP will only send out reminders to persons who have submitted their application for a Wear and Carry permit online.

  • If my handgun carry permit has expired, can I still renew it?

No, a new application must be submitted and go through the approval process again. If your permit has expired and you have submitted a new application you CAN NOT carry a firearm until the application has been approved AND you have received the new license in the mail.

  • If my Wear and Carry Permit has expired but I have submitted a renewal application can I still carry a firearm?

Yes, as long as the application was submitted at least 2 weeks before the permit expires. If an application is returned incomplete or further information is needed, after the 2 week expiration you can not carry a firearm. So it is best to submit a renewal application as soon as you are able to.
